One night during last week’s cold spells, we decided to have a quick and easy meal at our favorite eating place in Willis only to discover it was very crowded with a potentially long wait.
Disappointed, we started to head home, but suddenly remembered reading about a new place in town.
While we didn’t even know the name, we remembered the location because there once was a great barbecue place there. So, off we drove to find out what it had to offer.
Well, you wouldn’t know it from the outside, but ANGIE’S CATERING & CAFÉ, just east of Hwy. 75, is truly a hidden treasure in our little town of Willis, Texas!
Starting with the fresh linen tablecloths and napkins and the pleasant welcome from a delightful young lady, we knew we had found another place to eat out. The menu choices were unique and the dishes we chose were quite delicious.
For a moment it felt like we were in a classy, big city restaurant, but then we looked at the menu prices and realized we had just discovered a great variety of choices in a menu where everything was under $20.
Ron’s very tasty 8 oz. Texas Wagyu beef chicken fried steak, accompanied by double butter mashed potatoes, white pepper gravy, and green beans with onion and bacon cost $15. My chicken caprese sandwich was filled with grilled chicken breast, fresh mozzarella, pesto, tomato on ciabatta bread, and was extraordinary. After eating only half of it, I was quite full and took the other half home to enjoy the next day.
As we finished eating, the place began to fill up, and everyone was greeted as ‘old friends.’ As busy as he was, Chef Andy took a minute to stop by to ask about our food and invited us to come again to explore more of his creative gourmet dishes. Of course, owner Angie took plenty time to ensure that we were happy with every aspect of our evening.
We were entirely too stuffed to try a dessert, but plan to check out either the jumbo skillet cookie or traditional cheesecake with strawberry compote — or maybe even both — next visit.
Thanks to Angie, Chef Andy and their lovely staff, we had a great dinner and are planning another visit soon.
When you‘re ready for a distinctive and delicious night out, plan to visit ANGIE’S CATERING & CAFÉ at 200 E. Powell in Willis.
