THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Children will be able to hear books read by special guests, meet a real author and hear a new book about a BIG RED DOG named CLIFFORD™ during Children’s Book Week at The Woodlands Children’s Museum.
Now in its centennial year, Children’s Book Week is the nation’s longest-running literacy initiative.
Children’s Book Week activities at the museum will take place Tuesday, April 30, through Friday, May 3, at 4775 W. Panther Creek Drive, The Woodlands, TX 77381.
Visitors are encouraged to dress up as their favorite picture book character, create classic picture book-themed art in the Muse and enter for a gift basket drawing throughout the week. Clifford and Pete the Cat will be making periodic visits, too.
“We have designed our activities to introduce little ones to the joy of reading and its power to transport them to other times and places, real and imagined,” Executive Director Angela Colton said. “We’re especially excited about the opportunity to share Clifford and theRailroad Crossing, a delightful story that will be presented by Union Pacific Railroad.”
Below is a lineup of Children’s Book Week activities.
Tuesday, April 30
A representative from the Montgomery County Library System will be at the museum 10 a.m.-noon to provide information about library services, share information about the 2019 Summer Reading Program and help children age 5 and older sign up for a library card.
At 10:30 a.m., special guests from Union Pacific Railroad will read Clifford and the Railroad Crossing, and children will have an opportunity to meet Clifford himself at 10:30 a.m. and noon.
The book—released last December through a partnership with Scholastic, Safe Kids Worldwide and Union Pacific—teaches children about railroad safety.
Union Pacific also will pass out free copies of the new book, in English or Spanish, while supplies last. The book is not available for retail sale; it only can be obtained directly from Union Pacific.
At 11 a.m., the museum will present Picture Book Boogie Bash, where children can enjoy creative-movement activities and songs based on classic picture books.
Wednesday, May 1
At 10:45 a.m., Deputy Stephanie Coroiescu with The Woodlands Crime Prevention Unit of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office will be a celebrity reader. She’ll be presentingOfficer Buckle and Gloria, a picture book about a police officer whose dog, Gloria, is stealing the show during his safety presentations at local schools.
And at 11:30 a.m., visitors can join a game of Picture Book Bingo.
Thursday, May 2
Author Zach Merta will read Goodnight to The Woodlands at 10:30 a.m., followed by a meet-and-greet when visitors can meet him and buy copies of his book until noon.Goodnight to The Woodlands is a rhyming picture book with hand-drawn scenes from The Woodlands.
At 11 a.m., Shadow Puppet Theatre will present Where the Wild Things Are, followed by the action song, “Wild Things,” by The Learning Station.
Friday, May 3
Storybook Theatre will feature a Pete the Cat Meet and Greet at 10:30 a.m., noon and 1 p.m., along with a presentation of Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons, written by Eric Litwin at 11 a.m. Pete the Cat, a character created by artist James Dean, has been described as “one of the coolest cats in children’s literature.”
The Clifford activities during Children’s Book Week tie in with the Adventures with Clifford The Big Red DogTMexhibit, whichopened at the museum Jan. 18 and will be in placethrough Sunday, May 12.
Inspired by Scholastic Entertainment’s TV show, Clifford The Big Red Dog® on PBSKIDS®, the Adventures with Clifford The Big Red Dog exhibit offers numerous immersive “paws-on” adventures that reinforce “Clifford’s Big Ideas” – 10 simple tangible life lessons designed to help young children navigate their world. They are: Share, Play Fair, Have Respect, Work Together, Be Responsible, Be Truthful, Be Kind, Believe in Yourself, Be a Good Friend and Help Others.

To protect the health and safety of the museum’s costumed performers, Clifford The Big Red Dog and Pete the Cat will limit appearances to 15-minute stays. While the museum staff will do their best to accommodate as many patrons as possible, they will not be able to extend the appearance times.
Museum admissions will be limited throughout Children’s Book Week to ensure a fun, safe experience for visitors.
